Slavoj Žižek - Only A Catastrophe Can Save Us
Lecture hosted by Fahim Amir
Saturday, 04 Mar 2023
We hear all the time that it's five minutes (or a minute, or even 10 seconds) to noon, to global doomsday (global warming, nuclear war, global pandemic, total digital control over our lives...), so now is the last moment to awaken and stop the catastrophe. But what if the only way to prevent a catastrophe is to assume that it already happened, that the time is five minutes past the apocalyptic zero hour? What if some form of big catastrophe is not just a threat to avoid but also something that is needed to awaken us? Without such a catastrophe, we will just continue to slide towards a self-annihilation. Left to itself, history is not on our side, it works against us, against our survival.
For the final event and highlight of this year's Discourse program, Elevate will welcome philosopher Slavoj Žižek with his lecture "Only A Catastrophe Can Save Us" at the magnificent Minoritensaal in Graz.*
The event will be hosted by philosopher and author Fahim Amir. His book " Schwein und Zeit" was honored with the Austrian Karl Marx Prize, was on the non-fiction bestseller list of Deutschlandfunk Kultur, ZDF and Die Zeit, and was chosen as one of the best books of 2019 by the Goethe-Institut and the Frankfurt Book Fair.
*due to high demand the event will be moved to a larger venue. The new venue is now Orpheum Graz!
