The music of Sophia Kennedy, who was born in Baltimore and now lives in Hamburg, sometimes sounds like the soundtrack to a world hanging on a thread of memories. She combines the glamour and morbid charm of Tin Pan Alley Show tunes from the 1960s or 70s and yet is completely committed to the deconstructed modernity of club music. Her second album Monsters, out on City Slang last year, is full of twists and moments of beauty interspersed with paranoia.
