“Hirn Fein Hacken” (“finely chopped brains”), Bulbul's seventh studio album, seamlessly finds its place within the avant noise rock combo's existing body of work. The cover is a confusingly psychedelic observation test but as soon as you press play you'll know what time it is. The opening track “Fire” is exactly that and is probably capable of making the lamest of horses dance. This mammoth opener hits you with a wall of western- style guitars over a beat that would make Bo Diddley proud (or at least grin), only to make way for a harmonic bass solo followed by an organ frenzy. Lyrically, they seem very much at home with dadaists Ernst Jandl and William S. Burroughs. These aesthetics are underlined by a brilliant sensibility for catchyness, the element of surprise and (not lastly) shenanigans.
At this point, most readers would expect some kind of comparison to a bunch of other bands but the truth is that Bulbul simply sound like Bulbul. Period. So let your brain be finely chopped up, reassembled and reimplanted into your skull. It's alive!
