Elevate club Guide Saturday
Battle Cat, a new addition to the Graz club scene, is devoted to the electronic genres of acid and electro and will open the night at Dom im Berg.
Mieux is the name of the electronic project of the Viennese Christoph Prager and Felix Wolfersberger. Their sound is sparkling and uplifting; an eclectic mix of global styles. Here the synthesizers sparkle like the clanging of Indonesian gamelan, and even chimes are even used. Tastemakers like Gilles Peterson have even been convinced too.
The work of producer and singer Kelly Lee Owens, who this time can be heard with one of her Dj-sets, is also characterized by originality. Similar to her self-produced releases and remixes for acts like Björk, Mount Kimbie or St.Vincent, she combines springy minimal techno with ambient sounds and dreamy electro-pop songs
The contemplative sets of the cult DJ and producer Daniel Avery, who is considered as cult among insiders, can be associated with science fiction. His spherical, cosmically inspired minimal techno sets are futuristic to transcendental and so perfectly tuned that they maneuver us into a weightless space. Through his residency at the legendary Club Fabric and after his critically acclaimed ambient techno releases, Avery is considered a shooting star of the London club scene.
The night at the Dom im Berg is concluded by London-based Peach, who skips through the genres and constructs narratives in which vibrating tracks of wave, electro, funk, house and disco play the leading role. Their sets are full of charm, rousing and uplifting.
In the Tunnel, the focus on Saturday night will be on acts that operate within the hardcore continuum, sometimes drawing on the sounds of the 1990s.
Durbin is a producer and DJ, who besides the typical club genres also incorporates bass, breakbeat and hip-hop into his sets.
Mermaid & Seafruit consist of Markus Steinkellner, also known as Idklang, and musician and performance artist Magdalena Chowaniec. They also mix wildly the most different styles, but act much more aggressively and combine political lyrics with abysmal bass, R’n’B with noise, hard style with activism. The duo also likes to throw themselves into the crowd.
Dance producers nowadays are inclined to go on stage with a laptop under their arm and then stare at the screen. Not Andy Jenkinson, alias Ceephax Acid Crew. Ceephax drags his studio to every performance, puts a stack of drum computers and synths on stage and every track is performed live. While he scatters his acid over the audience, he also wants to have a conversation with them. Fuck Laptops! This is the real shit.
No notebooks for this old-school Acid producer who brings drums and synths to every gig and performs all of them live.
Sherelle is a DJ from London specialising in high-speed rhythms and heavy low-end frequencies. The DJ and radio presenter is at the forefront of the UK’s electronic music underground thanks to a signature style that’s captured the imagination of everyone who’s seen her play. Enter the dance during a Sherelle set and you’ll be met with pure energy as footwork, juke, jungle and other genres at the higher end of the BPM scale are unleashed and then rewound amid a sea of gun fingers.
The declared mission of the Paris collective Casual Gabberz is to free the Gabber genre from its negative image and bring it back to the clubs. The freakout is extended by tracks from Happy-Hardcore, Trance and Hardstyle - genres that rely on powerful basses and garish-melodic synths. And they also like to rap spontaneously.
The Saturday programme in the Dungeon is as uncompromising and confrontational as ever with its acts.
The dj sets of Sofia born and Vienna based musician Yuzu, who is opening the night at Dungeon, are build on transgressing genre boundaries and so leading through unexpected flows of happy, ecstatic, dark, hard, longing, sexy, concrete, proud and cocky. Hard, raging beats dissolve into ambience, hymnic r’n’b angels arise to usher in flames of noise, pounded out by the bass of juke and jungle beasts. Yuzu has been witnessed in Vienna, Berlin, London, Sofia, Linz and Innsbruck, including Wiener Festwochen, ImpulsTanz, Velak Gala, Popfest, Berlin Community Radio and FLUCA among others.
Busy musician and Ventil Records label operator Ursula Winterauer presents her new solo project Gischt in Graz. Known to many from the indie rock formation Ash My Love, Winterauer turns to experimental electronics as Gischt and explores the grey areas between digital ambient and slow motion techno.
And there will also be a release show: C.O.R.N. is the name of the Graz-based duo of drummer Patrick Wurzwallner and electronics engineer Nick Acorne. Together, they mix free jazz and bizarre electronics. At Elevate they present their debut album.
Behind Via App is the gender-queer musician and DJ Dylan Scheer, who is one of the central figures of the Brooklyn underground. Her harsh and disturbing club sets oscillate between a sound experiment rich in effects and the buzz of broken beats. She herself summarizes the acoustic meltdown under the label "Freak Techno".
The Spanish - Scottish duo Evol pushes the techno genre to its limits with their releases on labels like Diagonal. The tracks of Roc Jiménez de Cisneros and Stephen Sharp resemble a mixture of skeletal acid and deconstructed hardstyle and posses something of conceptual art at the same time. Their synth modulations are mercilessly oblique and yet danceable: while the beats become asymmetrical, the bass lines stretch out in all directions.
Bristol duo Giant Swan – brainchild of Robin Stewart and Harry Wright (aka Mun Sing) – prove their status as the punks of contemporary club music in their highly energetic live sets. Their powerful, aggressive tracks are a cross between desert industrial vocals, massive bass and crazy squeakiness. Their recently released debut studio album was also universally celebrated by the critics.
