Barbara Vogt works for the German town Andernach, where public parks were turned into accessible gardens. Instead of lawns people can discover various fruit-bearing shrubs, vegetables und flowers. Everything is organic. In a suburban area they run a permaculture project on 32 acres.
Welcome to Edible City Andernach! Where everything is for visual as well as culinary pleasure. Where the people are invited to harvest whatever they like for free, while the city saved a lot of money. Instead of planting new flowers several times a year, they now grow native low-maintenance plant species. The people are thrilled and the city considerably reduced it´s ecological footprint.
Edible City Andernach is Germany´s biggest public urban gardening project and inspires cities worldwide. Countless representatives visited the town to get advice for starting similar projects at home.
