reset.discover (for VR and ambisonics) [2018]

The piece reset.discover is the result of a collaboration between composer Antonia Manhartsberger and the VR artist Constantinos Miltiadis, investigating the possibilities of uniting spatial-visual and spatial-sonic elements into one abstract spatio-temporal virtual environment. The piece develops over notions of proximity and distance, thus consisting of two layers of experience. An individual point of view controlled by a VR HMD and headphones, and a correlated surrounding spatial audio loudspeaker setup. The audience is called upon to discover and experience this synthetic surrounding.

Antonia Manhartsberger is a composer of electroacoustic music born in Tirol (Austria). She graduated from the Department of Musicology at the University of Vienna in 2014, before pursuing studies in Computer Music at the Institute of Electronic Music of Kunstuni Graz. In her artistic and scientific work she mainly focuses on the spatialisation of sound, considering its perceptive and aesthetic facets and on collaborative practice in art production. In her performative works she examines social and political questions and their creative mediation. Furthermore, she is part of the feminist-postpop band Frau Sammer.

Constantinos Miltiadis is an architect, computational designer and researcher, currently an assistant at the Institute of Architecture and Media of TU Graz. He has studied architecture at NTU-Athens and CAAD ETH Zurich. Constantinos’ work is experimental and interdisciplinary, aiming to expand the scope of architecture and its aesthetics. He has taught creative programming, experimental computational and game design in undergraduate and post-graduate levels, as well as in conferences and festivals. His work has been presented in seminars, published in academic conferences as well as by international press and received awards in international competitions. Constantinos is currently on an educational sabbatical to study computer music at the Institute of Electronic Music of Kunstuni Graz. His work can be found on studioany.com
