Gottfried Kirchengast (born 1965) studied physics, geophysics and meteorology and is a university professor at the well-established Department of Geophysics (founder Alfred Wegener, 1924-1930) and head of the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change at the University of Graz. In a worldwide context, he is also Honorary Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Adjunct Professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia. As a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, he heads its Climate Expert Group and represents science on the National Climate Protection Committee. The internationally renowned researcher is the author of more than 300 scientific publications, supervisor of more than 40 dissertations and repeatedly makes groundbreaking contributions in the fields of earth observation and climate research.

Kirchengast is also involved in knowledge transfer and public relations work on the topic of climate change.
