An Internationale of Nationalists?
Andreas Peham, born 1967 in Linz, studied political science and a combination of contemporary history, development policy and sociology at the University of Vienna between 1990 and 2000. Since 1996 he has been working in the Documentation Archive of Austrian Resistance (DÖW), Department of Research on Right-Wing Extremism. Peham is also a founding member of the research group Ideologies and Policies of Inequality (www.fipu.at). Since the mid-1990s he has been active in teacher training and political education in schools (prevention of extremism, education critical of racism and anti-Semitism). He has numerous publications (also under his author's name Heribert Schiedel) on the subject (e.g. "Der rechte Rand. Extremist Attitudes in Our Society", Vienna 2007; "Extreme Rights in Europe", Vienna 2011).
Fields of activity/tasks in the DÖW:
- Collection and evaluation of right-wing extremist publications, which are made available to research as primary sources.
- Observation and electronic archiving of the media discourse on right-wing extremism and other forms of group-based misanthropy
- Content design of the section "News from the far right" on www.doew.at
- Advice for persons affected in various ways by right-wing extremism and other forms of group-related misanthropy (parents, teachers, etc.)
- Support for pupils and students working on right-wing extremism or related issues
- Research cooperations with domestic and foreign institutions
- Research aids for journalists, interviews with experts
- Primary prevention: school visits (workshops)
- Adult education: lectures, discussions and workshops
- Publications in professional journals and anthologies
The Documentation Archive of the Austrian Resistance (DÖW)
Was founded in 1963 by former resistance fighters and committed scientists. Since 1983 it has been a foundation jointly supported by the Republic of Austria, the City of Vienna and the Documentation Archive Association.
The main focus is on content: Resistance and persecution, Holocaust, Roma and Sinti, exile, medicine and biopolitics in National Socialism, Nazi and post-war justice, right-wing extremism after 1945, restitution and compensation after 1945.
Main fields of activity: Collection, archiving and scientific evaluation of thematically relevant sources. Archive and library operations with consulting and support activities for students, journalists, etc., in the field of contemporary history, especially for young people and pupils, but also in the field of adult education (production of teaching materials, exhibitions, guided tours, etc.).
