What is an artist who never "makes it"? ⓪ A hustler chimera of every creative profession known to man, apparently.Gergo Kovacs is a Hungarian worker in the cultural sector, self-taught, active since 2014. His early work, as an artist and curator, can be broadly defined by ① participating in the fine art movements referred to as "Post- Internet" and "New Aesthetic" ② promoting to approach applied arts with the intention of creating fine art ③ shaping viral online sub-cultures like "hyperpop", "vaporwave", "seapunk" and "health goth", ④ the identification and canonization of 20th-21st century design history, such as "Y2K", as a researcher of CARI. His recent work, as a media designer, can be defined by ⑤ award-winning posters made in an idiosincratic style inspired by Asian, Dutch and Hungarian art traditions ⑥ exploring "speculative design" as a resident artist of Art Quarter Budapest, focusing on the graphic designer's power and responsibility for "making culture", as opposed to the popular narrative of "just servicing the demand" ⑦ creating graphics for the experimental underbelly of the electronic music industry.
