The Refugee Protest Camp Vienna encompasses a series of largely self-organised protests from asylum seekers in Austria. It is part of a movement in many European countries which presses for an improvement of the legal position of asylum seekers on an international level. Last winter in Vienna, for the first time, the affected people addressed the government themselves. Through occupations and hunger strikes, they demanded improvements in asylum procedures and detention conditions, access to the labour market, legal residency in Austria and, at EU level, the abolition of the Dublin II Regulation. These issues not only relate to the current situation in Austria, but also point to serious shortcomings in European societies in which certain people are denied political and social rights.
