Elevate Concert: Hercules & Love Affair
In 2008, the number one hit "Blind" catapulted Andy Butler and his band project Hercules & Love Affair to the top of the music world and onto dance floors worldwide. The disco smash was a collaboration with singer Anohni, who had made it to world fame with her band Antony and the Johnsons and heartbreaking chamber pop.
Now, with the album "In Amber", comes a return to the roots and at the same time a redefinition of Hercules & Love Affair, once named after the ancient love affair between Hercules and the king's son Hylas.
Anohni can be heard on several songs – and Andy Butler himself, whose velvety, sonorous voice looks into abysses of death, decay and war. Despite all the gloom, the euphoria of disco comes through again and again, only extended by a thundering gothic sound that reminds of post-punk predecessors like Siouxsie and the Banshees.
The Berlin-based Peruvian-Greek producer and singer-songwriter Sofia Kourtesis is considered one of last year's newcomers. Inspired by her hometown Lima and influenced by the mystical spirituality of her community, she combines deep house with colourful, sun-drenched sounds and dreamy, bitter-sweet tunes.
Again and again, sophisticated samples of the most varied provenance appear - whether field recordings from the Amazon, from the field recordings from the Amazon, from protest movements or snippets from old films. The DJ sets also live from Kourtesi's passion for collecting and her open ear for global sounds. Good mood guaranteed!
