Lil Silva's arrival in dance music in late 2008 was as explosive as one of his club-rattling drops. Here was an 18-year-old from Bedford making music with all the minimal machine funk of Chicago's Trax label, the aggression of early grime, a tropical resonance with soca and the sonic invention of The Neptunes. His debut 12", with the echoed bongo hits of Seasons and Funky Flex on the flip defined the early moments of UK Funky. The next white label blended proto-grime tune Pulse X with his own Funky Flex, recreating it as a founding tune of UK Funky. The productions crossed genres with support from Hyperdub's Kode9 and Berlin's Modeselektor. Always looking to shy away from convention, the young producer's talents are becoming as renowned for their innovation as they are for the effect they are having on the scene. Prominent cultural magazine factmag.com has even gone as far as describing Lil Silva's sound as "grime in disguise".
