For this project, Robert Gander and Günter Wett spent two years examining the housing situation of asylum seekers in all 19 refugee hostels in Tirol. The decision on the location and character of these premises is an exercise of power that affects social conditions for the asylum seekers. Tirol depends on "foreigners", and it is not unusual that refugee hostels are located in accommodation establishments that have become unfashionable and are no longer seen fit for tourists. ''WARTERÄUME'' (waiting rooms) approaches these places with a subtle and respectful investigation into their architecture. By means of photographs and videos, spacial constitutions are brought to light. Robert Gander also reveals how inhabitants claim these spaces and make them their own. In about 80 interviews these people are given a chance to speak for themselves.
