The climate crisis, poverty, the social disintegration of societies: these horrors and crisis scenarios make international headlines and attract media attention. But what remains beyond the "bad news" that draws readers and viewers? What does the media offer beyond a voyeuristic, distanced gaze onto perishing worlds and dramatically escalating conflicts? Does the business of fear determine media coverage? What responsibilities do newspapers, radio and television have, when it comes to addressing solutions and social change, instead of just portraying sensational social crisis scenarios? And last but not least: What are the alternatives to sensational and populist journalism that instead of fear and helplessness creates a perspective of social change? Is it the new "social" media that provides a remedy?
